Hot off the press! Pressed for time? No worries! It’s quick and easy to make fresh tortillas right at home with a tortilla press!
First, mix two cups of masa with one and a quarter cups of hot tap water. A half teaspoon of salt is optional. Kneed a few times and then pinch off pieces of dough and just mold into golf ball sized balls – about two inches.
Now you just place your dough ball on the bottom plate of the press and close the press firmly. Voila! You have yourself a fresh tortilla. If any dough snuck out, you know your dough balls are too big, so just make them a little smaller.
For yummy, crunchy corn tortillas, lightly coat in vegetable oil, sprinkle with a little salt and bake at 450 degrees until lightly brown and crisp. For soft tortillas, toast in a lightly oiled skillet over medium heat for three to four minutes. Serve warm. Easy!
Here’s a cool tip too. To keep your press clean, place a piece of plastic wrap on the bottom plate before your dough ball and another on top of the ball before you put the lid down. A large zip lock can also be split open and used as a liner. After you are finished, simply wipe your press clean with a damp paper towel. You can also place a few layers of paper towels between the press plates to absorb any moisture between uses.
